Dr. Nikravesh’s Short Bio

Dr. Masoud Nikravesh

Executive Director and Program Manager

Dr. Masoud Nikravesh is the Executive Director of BISC (Berkeley Initiative in Soft Computing), the Computer Science Division at the University of California, Berkeley. BISC is a world-leading center for basic and applied research in soft computing, computing with words (CW), computational theory of perception (CTP), and precisiated natural language (PNL).  Dr. Nikravesh’s main focus, since 1994, is on development of computational intelligence methodology and  development of integrated methodology based on soft computing techniques (evolutionary computing including GA and DNA coding, neural network, fuzzy logic, and probabilistic reasoning) for 1) data fusion-mining & knowledge management- discovery, computational theory of perception, decision support systems & information systems in enterprise, and 2) analysis of large scale and complex data including earth sciences & energy recourses, internet-search engine, bioinformatics, telecommunication-customer related issues,  healthcare & digital home, and homeland security & defense. Dr. Nikravesh has published six books and over 150 papers and presentations on a wide range of topics in artificial intelligence and soft computing and their application.  Dr. Nikravesh is a leading expert in soft computing and is a board member and/or reviewer for many private and public centers of IT excellence.

Dr. Nikravesh received his Executive Certificate Degree in BioEntrepreneurship from Haas School of Business-UC Berkeley (2004). As first ranked student and supported through scholarship and fellowship throughout his education, he received his B.Sc from Abadan Institute of Technology-IRAN, MS (August 1993) and his PhD (in one year in with perfect 4.00GPA, Dec.1994) in Chemical Engineering from the University of South Carolina . His paper Hybrid Neural Network Dynamic Matrix Control (HNNDMC) that has been the basis for his PhD thesis (Dynamic Neural Network Control- DNNC) won second place in 1993 AICHE annual meeting student paper competition. He received full scholarship from University of California, Berkeley for his second Ph.D. in Material Sciences and Mineral Engineering Department, Fall 1994.  While he was student at UCB during 1994, he decided to start his scientific carrier as Postdoc researcher in Spring 1995 at University of California-Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab as joint appointment. He was the technology developer for a $750K project funded by DOE based on his PhD. thesis, a project ranked by DOE as Highest Ranked ACTI Project-1997. Prior to rejoining UCB in 2000, he was the senior research scientist with EGI at University of Utah from 1998-2000, where he was the technology developer for a $6.2 MM project funded by DOE and $1.5MM project funded by GRI. He is the recipient of the AAPG President’s Certificate of Excellence in presentation, AAPG Annual meeting, 1999.  From 1980-1993, he worked for National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) as lecturer, senior engineer, R&D, and executive assistance to the head of NIOC research Center. He has been in technical and strategic meetings with senior government officials, including the minister of petroleum and his deputies, and some of the member of the President, routinely,  where he managed  one of the most strategic NIOC project during 1985-1990 (Iran-Japan Petrochemical Feedstock project). Dr. Nikravesh is the BISC Executive Director, BTExact technology Senior Fellow and BISC Program Manager in the Computer Science Division, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley and Research Scientist in the Imaging and Informatics Group at NERSC (National Energy Research Scientific Computing Division, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. In addition, he served as the Associate Director (Co-founder) of Zadeh Institute for Information Technology (Information Technology) and Chairs of BISC-Earth Sciences, BISC-Fuzzy Logic and Internet, and BISC-Recognition Technology Groups.  He funded and directed so many projects at BISC program, including projects by BTExact technology, OMRON, Honeywell, Chevron-Texaco, ONR, DOE, Tekes, etc.  Dr. Nikravesh is the LBNL-NERSC (National Energy Research Scientific Computing Division) representative to the DiMI- UC Discovery Program and he is member of Executive Committee and member of research council-UC Discovery program. His credentials have led to front-page news at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory News (Researchers Use Soft Computing Techniques to Find Hidden Oil Reserves ) and headline news at the Electronics Engineering Times (Fuzzy logic is proven stable ). He was invited lecturer throughout the world including China, Hong Kong, Finland, Canada, UK, Turkey, and Iran and invited lecture at so many conferences, IFSA, NAFIPS, FuzzIEEE, IEEEGrc, INDIN, GEECO, ICSCCW, SEG and SPE. He has been member of IEEE, AICHE, SPE, AAPG, SEG, ACS, NAFIPS, IFSA, and other scientific scholarly society.  He has been reviewer for NSF, DOE, and UC system since 1996.
